In response to the increasing frequency and intensity of conflicts around the world—many involving grave violations of human rights, Indigenous rights, and the destruction of cultural heritage—the World Archaeological Congress (WAC) has issued a new statement outlining a principled framework for institutional action.

Building on the outcomes of the Extraordinary Council Meeting held on 30 April 2025, this statement affirms WAC’s enduring commitment to inclusivity, social and heritage justice, and the fundamental dignity of all peoples. Recognizing the urgent need for clarity and consistency in the face of armed conflicts, systemic oppression, and cultural erasure, the statement introduces an interim policy framework that guides how WAC will gather information, respond to violations, and advocate for accountability and constructive dialogue.

WAC emphasizes that the rights of communities—particularly Indigenous and historically marginalized groups—must be upheld alongside the protection of their tangible and intangible heritage. In cases where violations are determined to be one-sided, attributable, and recognized by international legal institutions, WAC may consider targeted actions, while continuing to promote dialogue where appropriate.

This policy framework is a living document and will be refined into a formal guideline by a newly established Task Force, with broad consultation and review by WAC’s global membership.
