This theme will explore women’s contributions and challenges within the field of archaeology, from past to present. It will examine professional and historical inequities within archaeology in a variety of settings, from academia to the heritage and private sectors. Interrogation of the intersection of multiple aspects of identity and the ways these have further contributed to processes of discrimination and marginalisation within archaeology is particularly encouraged.
We invite colleagues worldwide to highlight the contributions of women to archaeology over time and to critically examine the intersectional barriers that have limited their visibility. This theme encourages contributions that address current professional inequities and biases, explore the role of gender and gender-based violence in shaping field and laboratory experiences, and highlight the importance of male allyship in overcoming these challenges. It also encourages sessions that address the history of women’s contributions to the field, and that contribute to the creation of a more diverse and inclusive disciplinary historiography.
This theme is open to interested participants, and particularly welcomes contributions from men and scholars who have not previously engaged with this topic, as well as from established gender researchers. The goal of this theme is to dismantle the barriers that continue to marginalise women and perpetuate gender biases within academia.
