Join local experts for a range of walking tours around Darwin. These events are all free to WAC-10 participants and proudly supported by the Heritage Branch, Department of Lands Planning and Environment, NT Government.
Join local archaeologist Dr Patricia Bourke and Larrakia elder Lorraine Williams on a visit to archaeological shell middens on Larrakia Country to gain a deeper understanding of the traditions and practices of the Larrakia people, or accompany Sarah Hubbard, Senior Heritage Officer, on a heritage trail through Darwin city. Senior Heritage Officer Sam Wells will conduct two tours to the recently heritage listed Kahlin Compound site near Cullen Bay. Kahlin Compound was the first government institution built in Darwin in 1912 to segregate all Aboriginal people from the town area and house Aboriginal children removed from family and Country, known today as the Stolen Generation. This tour will look at the challenges of heritage listing a site with no tangible historical remains but where social and cultural values are high and community memory remains strong.
All of these sites hold stories and memories waiting to be shared. For all walking tours, please bring a hat, water and wear comfortable walking shoes.
Don’t miss these opportunities to learn, discover, and experience the past come alive in the present!
