THEME 10: From Soil to Archive and Beyond: Digital Tools to Support Archaeological Processes

Convenors: Stephen Stead, Paveprime Ltd, UK and Jane Jansen, Arkeologerna/Intrasis, Sweden

This theme aims to bring together digital practitioners in all steps of the archaeological process from field survey through excavation, post-excavation, archiving and dissemination (either to the profession or a wider public), with the aim of sharing best practice from all corners of the globe (not just from the digitally privileged).

Sessions on all types of digitally supported archaeological processes will be welcomed including:

•       Field survey
•       Excavation recording
•       Post-excavation and publishing
•       Oral and historic source integration
•       Archiving
•       Data reuse
•       Outreach

And all types of technologies, including:

•       Databases, schema and semantic ontologies
•       Data, meta-data and para-data
•       Virtual and Augmented Realities (VR & AR)
•       FAIR and CARE access to digital repositories and Virtual Research Environments (VREs)
•       Computational photography
•       2D & 3D scanning, modelling, annotation and publication (including CAD)
•       Linked and Open Data (LOD)
•       AI and Machine Learning including Natural Language Processing
•       Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

Overall, the aim is to share best practice, as well as to showcase the possibilities to the wider archaeological community present at WAC. For that reason, we invite sessions in innovative formats as well as traditional presentation driven sessions. So, workshops/training sessions, posters, round-tables, birds-of-a-feather meet-ups and panels are all welcome and encouraged.

So, if you use digital tools, either routinely or at the cutting edge, come and share your insights and practice with the wonderful WAC community: Spread the Word!
