We recommend that students looking to attend field schools seek out funding opportunities from their university and the field school itself – as these are two common sources of funding available to students to support this kind of activity. Below are some other sources of funding that may be of interest:
AIA Waldbaum Field School Scholarship – Must be a member of AIA. $1000 scholarship for US and Canada undergraduates or first-year graduate students.
Cohen Family American Archaeology Abroad Fellowship – Fellowship up to $1500 for students enrolled in an American college or university
Sacramento Archeological Society, Inc. Student Scholarship – Student funding up to $1500 to participate in archaeological research, must be willing to present at a public forum in the Sacramento, California area in return
Institute for Field Research (IFR) Scholarships – Nonprofit archaeologist-run organization, offers need- and merit-based scholarships, historically underrepresented group scholarships and support for students to attend the Oman-Bat program to research Persian Gulf cultures
IMPORTANT NOTE: At WAC-6 in 2008, the WACSC proposed a resolution on International Field Schools, which was successfully adopted. This resolution holds that international archaeological field schools should aspire to an equal collaboration between the visiting project teams and students, and local organizations. WACSC stands by this resolution and strongly encourages all students considering undertaking international field schools do so too.
