Programme

The Programme lists all the Keynote Sessions, Symposia and Workshops to be presented at WAC4, as well as all the other events taking place during the Congress.

A detailed breakdown of the contents of all the symposia, together with paper abstracts, is available on the Themes and Symposia page.

A complete list of papers for which abstracts have been received is also available – but this is a large file and might take a while to download.

The Symposia and Workshops are arranged as fourteen themes that run throughout the Congress. Symposia consist of formal papers and time for debate and discussion, whilst Workshops include sessions focussing on specific techniques, and issues and panel discussions. Keynotes are presentations on major themes and issues in archaeology today.

“Sherlock Bones and the Mystery of the Solitary Skeleton: the search for one of our earliest ancestors”
A Public Lecture (open to all) by Professor Ron Clarke, Kwane Molefe and Stephen Motsumi
20:00 in the Jameson Hall, University of Cape Town.

The recent discovery of a 3.5 million year old skeleton of a human ancestor at the site of Sterkfontein has captured the imagination of the world. In this presentation, the team that made the discovery will recount the story of this, the first ever complete skeleton and skull of an austrolopithicene.

WAC Executive Meeting (Day 2)

Sunday 10 January 1999

14:00-17:00 Plenary Session

The Future Past: Southern African Archaeology Today

Convened by John Parkington and Mary Leslie, with contributions from Amanda Esterhuysen, Tom Huffman, David Lewis-Williams, Carmel Schrire, Alinah Segobye and Francis Thackeray.

Southern African archaeology finds itself in a new political context at the turn of the millenium. This group of speakers will look at the changing face of archaeology as its practitioners and its practice adapt to the challenge of the new millenium. Dominant narratives and models are modified or abandoned; new opportunities in museums and schools are emerging; and the enterprise of presenting the past and other people, becomes more exciting but more demanding. Speakers reflect on past practice and new challenges; on versions of the past that might be different in the future; and on international and public perceptions of archaeological work in Southern Africa.

This plenary session will be open to the public.

18:00 onwards. Formal Opening Ceremony and Welcome

Formal presentations and opening party. Music by Abalingani Brothers and Luhlaza. Poster display: Southern African Archaeology Today. Archaeology in stained glass.
