{"id":74,"date":"2015-09-25T00:47:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-25T00:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldarch.org\/students\/?p=74"},"modified":"2016-02-08T08:39:46","modified_gmt":"2016-02-08T08:39:46","slug":"new-article-student-advice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldarchaeologicalcongress.com\/students\/2015\/09\/25\/new-article-student-advice\/","title":{"rendered":"New article with career advice for archaeology students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u00a0would like to draw your attention to a new article by Claire Smith, Jillian Garvey, Heather Burke and Ines Domingo Sanz forthcoming in Archaeologies \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/15849573\/Success_Strategies_for_a_Career_in_Archaeology\">Success Strategies for a Career in Archaeology<\/a>. The article provides (as you would guess from its title) career advice for students and early career researchers (ECRs) in archaeology and outlines a number of useful strategies to consider. Based on a recent survey by the authors, they highlight numerous topics have been identified as important for students and ECRs to be aware of and think strategically about. The topics explored in this article include: gaining field experience (through field schools as well as volunteering), the importance of networking, why publishing matters (including advice on navigating the peer review process), how to seek grant funding, the value of mentors and referees, as well as why leadership, teamwork, attending conferences and gaining international exposure can be considered important.<\/p>\n<p>We feel that it is important to remind students who are seeking advice such this that it is vital to understand your local context and make sure the advice you are following is relevant and useful for you. As Smith et al. note in their discussion on the general nature of their article:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018While there will be regionally specific strategies for different parts of the world that we have not identified, the actions we suggest here are generally applicable.
