Should you apply for this or that thing? Where should you find accommodations? We are here to help.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions!*

How much does attending the conference cost?

Registering for WAC-8 will cost between 22,000 and 42,000 Japanese Yen (convert to your own currency here!) The price depends on what country you live in and whether you are already a WAC member.

You can find out the price for your registration here: http://wac8.org/registration/

What does the registration fee pay for?

Paying for registration allows you to participate in the Congress and helps pay for WAC to put on the Congress. Be sure to register early for a lower price!

Every person who registers can attend all academic activities, the opening and closing ceremonies, daily coffee/tea breaks, and will receive a printed conference program. Typically the registration fee also pays for you to go on a mid-conference excursion to a local archaeological site of your choosing; the excursions planned for WAC-8 will be announced soon!

The registration fee does not include transportation to Kyoto, lodging, or any other living expenses.

Should I apply for Travel Support funding through WAC?

YES! If you are an enrolled student with an active WAC membership, you should apply for assistance if you need it. The fund exists to support people from historically underrepresented groups to attend.

Make sure that when you apply for support, you show you have made professional and financial commitments to attending WAC-8. It is actually a good thing if you apply for funding from multiple places! It shows you are serious!

What does Travel Support pay for?

If you receive travel funding, it will typically help pay for your registration and lodging. When applicants receive travel support which includes lodging, that means that WAC will arrange their accommodation (e.g. hotel room) for them. Lodging provided by WAC will be shared (not a room to yourself) to make the cost reasonable. For questions about how Travel Support works, contact the Travel Support Committee.

Are there any other funding opportunities through WAC?

Yes, there is also the Student Volunteer scheme, organized by us! The WAC-8 organizers have set aside funds for a small number of student volunteers to help at the congress. We are looking for a diverse group of students whose attendance (and presentations) at the conference will be made possible by this support. Make sure you apply to be a student volunteer before April 15th so we can consider your application!

Please note that you can apply to be a student volunteer as well as ask for Travel Support! We will be coordinating with the Travel Support Committee so that our student volunteers can apply to both.

I don’t know many other people going to WAC. Will there be activities for me at the conference?

YES! The Student Committee organizes lots of student activities at every WAC! Currently we are working on:

Student Mixer where you can socialize with other students attending the conference

Student Mentorship Forum (Session T07-G “Forum on Careers in International Heritage”) where you can ask questions of international heritage professionals about building a career in a variety of archaeology-related fields

Student Ethics Competition where students from all different countries get together in teams to debate ethical dilemmas

Plus, your Student Committee members and Student Volunteers will be everywhere you look! We promise, you will have people to spend time with even if you come to the conference on your own.

Where do I look for information about WAC?

There are tons of details about the Kyoto conference at the official website of the 8th World Archaeological Congress: http://wac8.org/ For more general information about the organization, go to http://worldarchaeologicalcongress.com/

Other questions?

We will seek out answers to more questions if we get them!

Feel free to send us more questions about being a student at WAC on Twitter or Facebook, in the comments below, or email us through this contact form:

[contact-form][contact-field label=’Name’ type=’name’ required=’1’/][contact-field label=’Email’ type=’email’ required=’1’/][contact-field label=’Question’ type=’textarea’ required=’1’/][/contact-form]

*Please note that we don’t represent the official conference organizers, travel support committee, or any other entity of the broader WAC organization.
