Research grants for American students doing research abroad, requirements vary by country where research will take place<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanbarfoundation.org\/research\/Fellowshipopportunities\/LawandSocialScienceDissertationFellowshipMentoringProgram.html\">Law and Social Science\u00a0Dissertation Fellowship and Mentoring Program<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; In-residence fellowship for students writing doctoral dissertations on law and social science with $30,000 stipend (US)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505076&amp;org=BCS&amp;from=home\">National Science Foundation (NSF) Archaeology Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Awards <\/a>&#8211; Up to $20,000 for students enrolled at US universities to conduct dissertation research, including field and non-field projects<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hfg.org\/df\/guidelines.htm\">Harry Guggenheim Foundation Dissertation Fellowships\u00a0<\/a>&#8211; Funding ($20,000) for the dissertation-writing portion of the PhD where research concerns understanding human violence and aggression (have funded many anthropological studies internationally, potential for archaeology as well)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensocietyfoundations.org\/grants\">Open Society Foundation Grants<\/a>&#8211; Funding for PhD students and faculty from specific African, Middle Eastern, and European countries studying social sciences who need funding to access research resources for their work, up to $15,000<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amphilsoc.org\/grants\/lewisandclark\">Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research<\/a> &#8211; American Philosophical Society&#8217;s grant for field-dependent studies by doctoral students who are US citizens, US residents, based at a US institution, or plan to carry out their work in the US, up to $5,000<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leakeyfoundation.org\/research-grants\/\">Leakey Foundation General Research Grant <\/a>&#8211; For doctoral students, post-doctoral students, and senior scientists studying human origins and evolution, up to $25,000<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leakeyfoundation.org\/baldwins\/\">Leakey Foundation Baldwin Memorial Fellowship<\/a> &#8211; Fellowship for students and scholars who are citizens of developing countries and wish to pursue an advanced degree outside the country, up to $15,000 per year for up to two years<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clir.org\/fellowships\/mellon\/applicants.html\">Mellon Fellowships for Dissertation Research in Original Sources<\/a> &#8211; Doctoral fellowship through Council on Library and Information Sources for research in &#8220;original sources&#8221; including books, documents, audiovisual material, artwork, and born-digital sources (appropriate for historical and contemporary archaeology, at the least)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doaks.org\/research\/fellowships-and-grants\">Dumbarton Oaks Fellowships and Grants<\/a> &#8211; Grants, residential fellowships, and pre-doctoral residencies in pre-Columbian, Byzantine, and Garden and Landscape studies<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.archaeological.org\/grants\/700\">AIA Olivia James Traveling Fellowship<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; applicants must be a member of the AIA. Up to $25,000 for US citizens engaged in classical archaeology research, for travel but not to support field excavation expenses. Must be a PhD student or immediately after.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/honorfrostfoundation.org\/grant-applications\/\">Honor Frost Foundation<\/a> &#8211; for marine or maritime archaeology, accepts applications from students studying for a Doctorate or similar higher research degrees to support travel, fieldwork and related costs needed for their research (will not cover tuition fees etc.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socarchsci.org\/awards1.html\">Society for Archaeological Sciences Student Research International Travel Award<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; up to $1000 is available to help with costs of international travel for laboratory or field research to Masters and PhD students who have been SAS members for more than one consecutive year<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fatomei.com\/social.html\">Social Science Scholarships, Fellowships, and Postdoctoral Awards list <\/a>and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fatomei.com\/native-american-scholarships.html\"> Native American Scholarships list<\/a>\u00a0by Francisco A. Tomei Torres<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianofi.com\/fellowship-opportunities\/\">Smithsonian Institution Fellowships Listing<\/a> &#8211; Fellowships organized by institution, including a variety of historical and material culture areas of interest to archaeologists, as well as technical museum training<b><u><span style=\"font-size: large\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/explorers\/grants-programs\/yeg-application\/\">National Geographic&#8217;s\u00a0Young Explorers Grant<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; For exploration-based research done by people aged 18-25<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/explorers\/grants-programs\/waitt-grants-application\/\">National Geographic&#8217;s\u00a0Waitt Grants<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Funding for direct costs of research with exceptional scientific merit, no advanced degree required<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceastudyabroad.com\/students\/financing\/scholarships.html?GCID=C11368x460#\">Cultural Experiences Abroad scholarships<\/a> &#8211; Programs for American and Canadian students for global learning experiences, six slightly different programs ranging $500-$3,000 US<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/fellowships\/\">UNESCO Fellowships Programmes<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Fellowship programs for study in particular countries including China, Israel, Japan, and Saudi Arabia<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hastac.org\/scholars\/apply\">Humanities, Arts, Science, Technology Alliance and Collaboratory\u00a0(HASTAC) Scholars<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hastac.org\/scholars\/apply\">\u00a0<\/a>&#8211; For students at all levels pursuing projects in digital media and learning<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/acor\/felappl.htm\">American Center for Oriental Research <\/a>(ACOR) Fellowships &#8211; Many fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students, many require research to be done in Jordan (Also<a href=\"http:\/\/www.archaeological.org\/grants\/2911\"> summarized here<\/a> by AIA)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ifrglobal.org\/students\/scholarships\">Institute for Field Research (IFR) Scholarships<\/a> &#8211; Nonprofit archaeologist-run organization, offers need- and merit-based scholarships, historically underrepresented group scholarships\u00a0and support for students to attend the Oman-Bat program to research Persian Gulf cultures<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saa.org\/AbouttheSociety\/Awards\/SAANativeAmericanScholarships\/tabid\/163\/Default.aspx\">Society for American Archaeology (SAA) Native American Scholarships<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Must be a member of SAA. Scholarships for Native American students and employees of tribal cultural preservation programs (up to $10,000).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.explorers.org\/index.php\/expeditions\/funding\/expedition_grants\">Explorer&#8217;s Club Student Grants <\/a>&#8211; $500-5,000 for exploration and field research by secondary school, undergraduate, and graduate students<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theihs.org\/scholarships\">Institute for Humane Studies Scholarships and Grants<\/a> &#8211; Funding for graduate school application fees and graduate students pursuing liberty-advancing academic research (especially seem to favor programmes relating to policy and ethics, past and present).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sydney.edu.au\/arts\/aaia\/research\/aaia_fellowship.shtml\">The Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens Fellowship for Research in Greece<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; supports travel to Greece for\u00a0Australian post-graduate students and academics from Australian Universities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aacai.com.au\/services\/prizes-awards\/#student-support-fund\">Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists Inc. Student Support Fund<\/a> &#8211; research grants open to honours and masters by coursework students at Australian universities<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/apaclassics.org\/awards-and-fellowships\/minority-scholarship-classics-and-classical-archaeology\">Society for Classical Studies\u00a0Minority Scholarship in Classics and Classical Archaeology<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; scholarship to help minority American undergraduate students prepare for graduate research<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wdhof.org\/scholarships\/scholarships.shtml#underwater_archaeology\">The Cecelia Connelly Memorial Scholarships in Underwater Archaeology<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; scholarships for women of any age who are graduate or undergraduate students in the field of\u00a0underwater archaeology<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Many countries and universities host their own scholarship databases, which are highly relevant for prospective postgraduates to consider and seek out prior to more specific awards listed above.
